Details: ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES Responsible for organizing the smooth delivery of patient care on assigned shift. Assures emergency equipment is checked every shift. Completes personnel assignments at the end of shift for the following shift. Assures accurate documentation of pertinent patient data. Able to operate PYXIS medication system and resolve discrepancies before end of shift. Interprets hospital policies and procedures and promotes observance of administrative and technical procedures according to established procedures. Assigns personnel to inservices/education programs. Coordinates patient activities with other departments. Responsible for directing emergencies that may occur during the shift. Assures that supplies are ordered and restocked as needed. Assures that equipment is cleaned and returned to the appropriate area. Maintains a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff. Performs assessment of assigned patients and performs care functions requiring the skills of a RN. Make rounds on each patient at least once per shift to ensure that nursing care is performed according to recognized standards and treatment given according to physician's orders and to ascertain the need for additional or modified nursing care. Administers or assists administration of IV fluids or medications. Assures accuracy and completeness of all surgical permits. Reviews charts on all surgical patients prior to going to surgery to ascertain all pre-operative procedures have been completed. Reviews initial post-operative assessment on all surgical patients. Reviews all clinical reports for abnormalities and takes the appropriate action. Communicates all pertinent patient information to physician. Accompanies physician on patient rounds to communicate with physician concerning condition of patient and receives instructions to coordinate required patient care. Assures initiation and documentation of discharge planning. Checks and co-signs all physician orders written on the shift. Assures initiation of care plan on admission with adjustments as needed. Updates care plan as needed including documentation of goals met, effectiveness of interventions, and need for additional interventions. Adjusts patient classification as patient's needs require. Assists in orientation of new nursing personnel assigned to unit. Evaluates educational needs of staff and requests appropriate inservices programs and/or provides on the job training. Initiates, plans, and coordinates patient teaching. Performs employee performance evaluations as delegated by Unit Manager. Completes the admission assessment with attention to biophysical, psychosocial, environmental, self care, spiritual, functional, nutrition and education needs, and discharge planning needs as appropriate for all age levels. Investigates all patient, physician, and personnel complaints and documents appropriate action. Reviews all incident reports written on shift for completeness and to assure that appropriate action was taken. Adjusts assignments as needed. Applies knowledge of age related factors appropriately to patients age groups of patients served are infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric. Acts as preceptor to nursing students and new employees. Participates in the pi process to identify, implement, and evaluate ways to improve patient care. Required to cross-train to other areas of the hospital as needed. Float nurses will have an orientation period to meet the needs of the individual nurse and the areas they work in. One charge nurse will remain on the floor until the following shift report is over to handle any emergency situations that may arise during shift change. Applies knowledge of living wills, advanced directives, and do not resuscitate orders to patient care and assures that they are accurately carried out. Responds to patient's requests with promptness, empathy, and genuine interest. Attends appropriate inservices in education both departmental and hospital. Always practices and promotes good public relations. This position requires the ability to follow directions, maintain confidentiality, trustworthiness, orderliness, accuracy, and punctual attendance during hours of work and the ability to interact with co-workers, customers, and visitors in a professional manner. Details: EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE High school graduate or equivalent required. Two years staff nursing preferred with experience in varied areas of patient care. Clerical perception is necessary to prepare records and charts. Must have knowledge and understanding of advanced nursing theory and practice. Must have recent OR, Circulating experience CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES CPR required. ACLS preferred. Current license to practice professional nursing by the Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners required.
