Austin Peay State University invites applications for an interim (one-year) appointment in Music Therapy at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor, commencing August 1, 2019. This is a one-year position with a search for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor and Coordinator of Music Therapy to commence in fall 2019 for a fall 2020 start-date pending approval and funding. The successful candidate will work directly with the Department Chair to launch a fledgling undergraduate Music Therapy curriculum and oversee the application process for American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) and National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) accreditation. Select courses towards the degree are already in place, with additional courses and degree offering (Bachelor of Music with a Concentration in Music Therapy) scheduled for fall 2020 launch. Role PurposeResponsible for organizing and implementing a music therapy program to address physical, emotional, cognitive and social needs of patients. The systematic application of music in a therapeutic environment will be used to promote wellness, manage stress, alleviate pain, express feelings, enhance memory, and improve communication. ResponsibilitiesUses music therapy as a process that combines the verbally transcendent and emotionally authentic aspects of music with the needs of the patient.Serves as a resource person and guide providing musical experiences that will aid in patient care.Designs and conducts music sessions for individuals and groups, based on client needs.Coordinates therapy with other team members and shares response to music therapy intervention.
