The Astronomy Department develops cutting-edge instrumentation for telescopes around the world and also operates multiple telescopes in the Charlottesville area for education, public outreach and research including the historic 26-inch McCormick Observatory. It maintains a well-equipped machine shop that includes a 3-axis CNC mill, 2-axis CNC mill, CNC lathe, and additional manual lathes. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: designing and building instruments for astronomical use from drawings and oral instructions from faculty and students; purchasing the necessary materials and tooling for a machine shop; basic machine upkeep and repair; performing regular telescope maintenance checks that include lubrication, troubleshooting, and replacement of worn parts to ensure proper operation of telescopes at McCormick and Fan Mountain Observatories as well as student telescopes adjacent to the Department; supplying liquid nitrogen to and from the observatories as needed for ongoing operation; disposing of hazardous waste and surplus property when needed by the department; maintaining fluid levels and managing maintenance and inspection appointments for department vehicles; and interacting with the University of Virginia Facilities Management as one of several facility coordinators for Department buildings. The BME department was founded in 2006 following a 35-year history as a research center, has 32 departmental faculty members, over 60 affiliated graduate faculty and a tradition of excellence in research and education including a continuously ABET accredited undergraduate program.
