The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Center (UROC) at CSU Monterey Bay was established in 2009, with a mission to encourage and facilitate faculty-mentored undergraduate research, scholarship, and creative activities across all schools and academic disciplines. Liaise with representatives from CSUMB’s News and Public Information and Development offices to promote UROC news highlights. Participate in coordination of UROC ambassador program, sending students to speak with community clubs, organizations, and current and future supporters of UROC. Student Research Placement Serve as primary point of contact for all students interested in UROC programs; serve as lead for UROC consultation program. Organize UROC’s student tracking system for student appointments and workshops. Prepare and analyze student tracking information for reports and internal review. Train UROC staff on protocols and procedures as necessary. Review applications and aid the Research Associate with placement of students in undergraduate research positions for the UROC Scholar and UROC Researcher programs. In conjunction with the UROC Research Associate, identifies and solicits new research placement opportunities for students and provides guidance to agency mentors and organizations interested in developing new research opportunities for students. Reviews site applications and descriptions of research objectives and skills required of students to ensure their experience will be at an appropriate level of professional experience. Administer UROC Certificate Program, including promotion, application review, and student/mentor consultations. Administer UROC Research Rookies program, including promotion, student contact and tracking. Produces reports on special projects related to professional development and research placements. First and Second Year Outreach Lead outreach and recruitment efforts targeting first and second year CSUMB students. Liaise with student clubs and campus programs, such as Living Learning Communities, which serve first and second year students. Lead UROC peer-to-peer student mentoring program (UROC ambassadors) in 1st and 2nd year outreach activities. Facilitate on-campus collaboration amongst campus student services offices to coordinate workshop offerings, attendance, and tracking (SOAR Collaborative). Collaborate with other campus programs and to introduce students to undergraduate research opportunities through research-based field trips, and other cohort building activities. Community College Outreach Work closely with CSUMB and Community College transfer services staff to provide information to potential transfer students about undergraduate research opportunities at CSUMB. Work closely with staff from the offices of Student Success, Admissions, the Cooperative Learning Center (CLC), and First Year Experience to provide information and services for transfer students. Organize CSUMB staff and faculty presentations at local Community Colleges. Develop undergraduate research materials targeted at community college students. Conduct on-site workshops, seminars and informational sessions regarding professional development skills, undergraduate research, and UROC’s mission. Organize campus tours of CSUMB and field trips for community college and CSUMB students. Maintain oversight of UROC’s peer to peer mentoring program and ensure connection with transfer office peer-to-peer programs designed to connect transfer students with opportunities for inclusion prior to- and following transfer to CSUMB. In collaboration with UROC and College of Science faculty and staff, organize community college student summer research opportunities on the CSUMB campus (CCARE program). Other Functions : Perform other duties as assigned by the Associate Director. Collect data and perform assessment of STEM transfer services. Assist with UROC Scholars courses as necessary. Promote scholarly activity by attending and presenting at professional development and subject specific conferences and workshops. Promote and maintain an atmosphere of excellent internal and external customer service. Develop and maintain an atmosphere of teamwork. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES : Working knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior; procedures and activities of the program to which assigned; general knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management. General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior. Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements; obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews; reason logically; collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data; advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required; recognize multicultural, multisexed and multi-aged value systems and work accordingly; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts; and, rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned. Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas Services Office. Possession of these knowledge and abilities typically is demonstrated through the Experience requirements below. Minimum Qualifications Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required. A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling. Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related. Specialized Skills Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree in a humanities, social science or science discipline. Experience working with a diverse and multicultural population. Ability to design and conduct professional development and career workshops for students. Experience in working with and directing student interns and volunteers. Experience working in a university setting. Possess individual initiative, and have a high tolerance for ambiguity. Experience in student tracking, assessment of programmatic effectiveness, and student learning. Technical fluency with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Drive, Oracle-PeopleSoft, or CSU Common Management System, or equivalent student information system; Internet browsers; and Google mail and calendaring. Highly desirable : Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to CSUMB’s Vision .
