Although these are research-focused positions, we seek innovative teachers to participate in the department’s interdisciplinary PhD program and develop place-based classes and short courses at ECU’s Outer Banks campus. East Carolina University has recently restructured its coastal enterprise, aligning research on its Greenville, NC campus with expansion of the Outer Banks campus (the Coastal Studies Institute (CSI), near Manteo, NC). These changes are a result of an expanded institutional recognition that ocean margins are critical coastal regions of the Earth where continents and oceans interact, and they are measurably changing in response to societal impacts and natural variability. Approximately 40% of the global population lives within 100 km of the shore. The significance of margins to coastal residents and other ecosystems is enormous. A centerpiece of this renewed commitment is the formation of a new Department of Coastal Studies (DCS). The DCS will coordinate and enhance research communities across ECU’s Greenville campuses, the coastal campus, and our partner Institutions, and provide ECU with a strong center and point of contact to expand its leadership role in addressing interdisciplinary coastal and marine issues. Existing DCS faculty have been recruited from other ECU departments, and the group of scholars recruited through this search will form an important part of the core of this new institution. CSI is a growing interinstitutional research and education enterprise, engaged in innovative and applied coastal research and situated on a scenic new waterfront campus on Roanoke Island. CSI is located near, and has active collaborations with, the USACE Field Research Facility (http://www.frf.usace.army.mil/) in Duck NC, a world-renowned coastal observation center. This proximity and a set of existing relationships provide an opportunity to leverage established nearshore data resources, a real-time coastal processes numerical modeling framework, and data management and dissemination infrastructure. The Outer Banks campus houses an eclectic and passionate collection of researchers and operations and support staff and is a great place to work. The Outer Banks is one of the world’s premier ocean and water sports locations, and northeastern North Carolina houses a remarkable collection of marine and terrestrial ecosystems and wildlife. These positions are an opportunity to be part of an exciting and dynamic new enterprise in a great environment.
