The goal of these efforts is to bring together a core group of faculty who work across traditional curricular and research boundaries to strengthen UNCW’s established excellence in coastal and marine sciences. In support of this effort, we seek a faculty member in the area of Marine Geology to begin in August 2019. This hire will join more than 70 current coastal and marine science affiliated faculty at UNCW. Minimum Requirements Specifically, to complete the Coastal Resource and Energy Systems cluster, the Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences seeks a tenure-track assistant professor with expertise related to Marine Geology of continental shelves. Candidates must have completed a Ph.D. in Marine Geology or Earth, Ocean, or Marine Sciences. Research interests should include, but are not limited to, stratigraphy and sedimentary processes on the continental shelf. The candidate is expected to utilize cutting-edge technology, collect and interpret data, and possess the ability to incorporate these approaches into course offerings. Preferred Qualifications The successful candidate for this position will: 1) be committed to exceptional teaching at the introductory level (e.g., introduction to geology/oceanography), including oversight of laboratory sections, and the ability to teach upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses in their specialty (e.g., seafloor mapping, ocean cruise techniques, geological oceanography); 2) support the established undergraduate and graduate degree programs within the Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences; 3) establish and maintain a vigorous, externally-funded research program that engages students; and 4) have the potential to collaborate in research with existing faculty in the Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences, as well as across the coastal and marine sciences at UNCW, and associated governments and agencies. This position is connected to UT’s strategic focus on water quality at the land-lake interface of the Great Lakes. We seek an individual whose research is related to near-surface geophysics focusing on environmental geology and hydrogeology, and who is likely to collaborate with department researchers investigating nutrient transport through large watersheds into Lake Erie and other large-scale systems. The department has a broad selection of geophysical equipment and recently renovated laboratory space. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an active, independent, externally-funded research program that involves both undergraduate and graduate students. Excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level is also expected, and over time the candidate will be expected to teach courses on geophysics, mapping and structural geology, geologic hazards and introductory geology. Current research expertise in the department includes coastal, glacial and Quaternary geology, hydrogeology, aquatic ecology, wetland restoration, ornithology, herpetology, climate change, plant biology, soil ecology, biogeochemistry, invasive species, and water resources. Qualifications A Ph.D. in geophysics, geology, earth sciences or a closely related field is required. Postdoctoral or equivalent experience will be viewed favorably. This is an entry level, tenure-track Assistant Professor position involving a standard research-teaching-service workload.
