There are opportunities to develop collaborations within the department and across the university in the fields of membrane biochemistry, biophysics, chemical biology, material sciences, and biomolecular engineering. A Ph.D. in Chemistry or a related field is required at the time of employment. Our Chemistry department embodies faculty members who have impressive records of scholarship and research achievements. What Your Job Will Be Like You will lead a highly diverse, multidisciplinary team conducting scientific research and technology development. Identifying research priorities for the department based on sponsor strategic needs and Sandia capabilities will be a critical responsibility. You will be expected to cultivate partnerships with other departments within the CBRN Defense and Energy Technology Center, maintain safe operation of BSL-1 and -2 laboratories, and provide a creative and productive work environment. Staff development is a top priority for this position. The manager is also responsible for developing new programs, identifying new sponsors, and maintaining the existing sponsor base. On any given day, you may be called on to Evaluate progress of department projects to identify and address issues Provide scientific, technical, and programmatic guidance to staff Review department budgets and address issues Meet with operations support personnel to direct their activities Develop a safe, secure, creative and productive team-oriented work environment and a culture that promotes safety, security, and values a diverse and inclusive work environment Implement Environmental Safety Health (ESH) and Work Planning and Controls (WPC) policies for department activities Promote and support the professional development of a staff along with assessment of performance, balancing work assignments, providing recognition and if necessary dealing with disciplinary actions Coordinate recruitment, selection, training, and hiring of new staff Participate on Center leadership team to evaluate strategy and operations Pursue customer engagement activities with sponsors Develop and sustain partnerships with other organizations within Sandia, other laboratories, industry, and academia. Qualifications We Require PhD in biological sciences, physical sciences, or engineering Record of strong technical contributions as proven by peer-reviewed publications Record of technical leadership as demonstrated by scientific accomplishments and project leadership Excellent written and oral communication skills as proven by peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, and proposal writing Demonstrated ability to build and develop strong interdisciplinary teams and partnerships across organizational boundaries Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.
