The NASA Ames team of NASAs Astrobiology Institute (NAI) is seeking applicants for NASA Astrobiology Postdoctoral Fellowships, under the NASA Postdoctoral Program (NPP). NPP applications can be submitted in one of two areas - Laboratory Astrochemistry or Computational Quantum Chemistry. Our overall goals are to understand the evolution of prebiotic chemical complexity and the organic inventory of protoplanetary disks and primordial planets. The laboratory research investigates the composition, as well as the physical and chemical properties of interstellar and planetary analog materials. Among the materials studied are analogs for interstellar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (the largest molecules so far identified in space), aerosols in planetary atmospheres, ice mantles on interstellar grains and ices in comets and on Solar System bodies. These cosmic material analogs are produced in the laboratory under conditions close to those expected in the interstellar and/or interplanetary medium (i.e., low temperatures and high vacuum). These materials are routinely studied in our laboratory using analytical chemistry techniques such as infrared spectroscopy, time-of-flight mass spectrometry, liquid and gas chromatography, X-ray Absorption Near Edge Spectroscopy (XANES), etc. Thus, experience with these analytical techniques, cryogenics, and high vacuum systems is desirable. We are also studying the effects of interstellar and planetary processes on the structure and composition of these materials, when they are subjected to ionizing radiation such as ultraviolet light or energetic electrons, or are heated and cooled. Computational quantum chemistry methods are utilized to elucidate the detailed mechanisms of chemical reactions in both the gas and condensed phases, as well as in the more complicated cases explored by the laboratory experimental involving catalytic processes. Using computational methods, we investigate reactions leading to the formation of biogenic molecules in both the gas-phase, which will be useful for our astronomical modeling, and in condensed phase interstellar ices in conjunction with the laboratory experiments. Applicants in this area must be familiar with ab initio and density functional theory (DFT) quantum mechanical methods. These approaches will be used to determine which reaction products are more feasible and which are either less feasible or not possible under various physical conditions. This work will include exploring chemical structures, reaction rates, spectroscopic constants, and reaction pathways of important biomolecules and their precursors. The computational quantum chemistry research will be done utilizing our in-house computers and the NASA Advanced Supercomputing facility, using state-of-the art quantum chemistry computer programs. Basic knowledge of Linux, and experience with organic and physical chemistry courses is essential for this work. Applicants who apply for this research opportunity and are subsequently selected for an NPP award are expected to attend the Astrobiology Graduate Conference (AbGradCon) and/or the Astrobiology Science Conference (AbSciCon) using the travel funds that are conferred as part of the NPP award.
